Fall Out Boy History

Pete Wentz

Talk about overnight success! Fall Out Boy began it's legacy only a few years ago in Chicago. Friends Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman had big ideas for forming a super band that had the essence of Green Day, Descendants and The Smiths- what they would come up with was something wholly unique yet strangely familiar. Still little punks in high school, just like us, Wentz and Trohman met Stump at a Borders Bookstore in 2001 and, in typical scene fashion, they began to discuss music.

Interestingly enough, ,Fall Out Boy got it's name after asking a group of fans for ideas. Someone yelled out "Fallout Boy" which just happened to be Radioactive Man's sidekick from the Simpsons- hey, if you're going to name your band after a cartoon, why not the greatest cartoon of all time? Besides, the Quagmire's probably wouldn't make for a marketable band name, but we'll save that argument for another day- gigitty.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and Fall Out Boy began their circuits at Knights of Columbus's throughout Illinois. Gaining a huge fan base, they were finally signed to Fueled By Ramen (think Jimmy Eat World and Yellowcard). And eventually, they landed a pretty sweet advance from Island Records to record an official album- "Take This To Your Grave" would go on to receive gold status. This was the closing deal that would sign them to Island Records (think The Killers and Wolfmother) in 2003. As a little aside, if you can get your little fingers on the limited edition 12" vinyl, there's a special hidden dance remix of "Grand Theft Autumn" on there!

Fall Out Boy's sound, in typical media fashion, has been classified as emo- the band has even payed homage to the kings of screaming tears, The Get Up Kids, as one of their influences. In a world of sub-sub genres and micro classifications, Fall Out Boy has been broadly categorized by fans as Pop Punk. While collaborating with the likes of Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Timbaland and a few other major producers, we'd like to think that these guys are more than just a label.

It was only in 2005 that Fall Out Boy made its first major label release "From Under the Cork Tree," which made it's home in Billboard's 200 top ten list eventually earning double platinum status. Allmusic has been quoted in saying that this album's, "first five tracks are relentless, with razor- sharp melodies that seem familiar but sound totally unique at the same time." "Sugar We're Goin Down" hit the big time when it reached the number 3 spot on Modern Rock Charts and the Number 1 spot on MTV's TRL. The video,(see below) earned them a MTV Video Music award for MTV2 and a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Their next single "Dance Dance" would prove that Fall Out Boy's music wasn't only mosh worthy, it was dance worthy too!

Their last album, "Infinity on High," reached number one on Billboard's 200 after the release of their anthem rock single "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arm's Race" in 2007. This song has been rumored to cover Wentz's irritation with the new Emo Scene."Thanks for the Memories" tugged on some heartstrings and peaked at number 11. They plan to release their next major label album, "Folie a Deux" in November 2008. So expect some new material when you hit up a Fall Out Boy show and while you're reading this, don't forget to pick up some Fall Out Boy tickets on your way out before you get caught up in the arms race!
